BURGER KING - The Impossible Whopper

I've tried the Impossible Whopper and didn't notice any different in taste. What did bother me was how they could get a 'medium rare' burger from a plant base. As the CNET reporter noted, she hadn't eaten real meat for some time and the more she ate of the Impossible Whopper, the taste/ texture was so similar that she couldn't finish the burger! I admit to having the same issue.

As you'll see from THIS LINK of the Nutritional info from the Burger King website, the Impossible Whopper is not even listed.

I was able to find the following information from CNET

Their article tells us:
The Impossible Whopper is a plant-based protein version of Burger King's famous Whopper sandwich, made with an Impossible Foods burger patty. It looks exactly the same and, according to CNET editor Brian Cooley, tastes just the same too.

Here is the one line that disturbs me:
Despite the fact that this lab-grown burger ...

Lab grown?

But I kept reading and here's what I learned.

The 'burger' is a blend of soy and potato proteins a change they made from 1.0 which used wheat protein. 2.0 is now gluten free. The burger's fat source comes from coconut and sesame oil.

I couldn't share the video from CNET but if you follow THIS LINK and scroll down, you'll find a 4 minute video that walks you through the process.  However, they do have a video on YouTube.

Have you tried the Impossible Whopper? If so, let us know what you thought.  If not, treat yourself to lunch then come back and tell us your opinon.

RECIPE WEDNESDAY - Quick Chicken Fried Steak

While there are some things you can buy less expensively at other box stores, these Ribeye Steaks from $Tree aren't bad.

They are very thin sliced. Some are more gristly than others but otherwise they'd be great for a steak and cheese sub. Think of them like a breakfast steak.

The gristle is found in all ribeye steaks. The thicker the cut, the less pronounced you'll deal with. And face it, if you're eating a nice thick steak, unless the leaders are really bad, you don't notice them.

One day last week a writer friend and I were discussing Chicken Fried Steak - the best you can find in Texas. Afterwards I couldn't stop thinking about it so I went scrounging the freezer. I thought I had a couple of cube steaks. No such luck, but I did find two of these and thought 'why not'?

I pounded them out to break up those leaders and cooked them up as I would have any other cut I usually use for chicken fried steak. They fried up beautifully!  And sooo very tender. Pounding them out gave me 4 steaks that I used for dinner that day, breakfast the next day followed by two additional dinners.

You'll notice I get some really good, quick meals for Bob and I from $Tree. I've heard that not all of their stores have the coolers so check yours out next time you're grocery shopping.

Whatever you choose to eat,
Enjoy the Journey!

RECIPE WEDNESDAY - Breakfast Anyone?

I've always heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For me, that is protein of some sort around 10 a.m. I can't eat much when I first get up. A couple of fig newtons with my coffee and I'm good. Just something light to kick in the metabolism.

A couple of weeks ago I had two hamburger patties left over from supper. I sliced them in half horizontally, turning them into a true hamburger 'bun'.

Next I fried an egg over easy and added a slice of american cheese.

Bottom slice of hamburger, topped with fried egg

Slice of American cheese and other 1/2 of burger patty.

YUM!

You are still eating this with a fork but was so very good. Another great addition would have been to top it with a bit of country gravy. Will try that next time.

What's your go to Breakfast of choice?
Whatever you choose, Enjoy the Journey...

Weekly Check-in

I know this is supposed to be a Monday post but may I ask a couple of questions first?
1) how many of you have in-laws?
2) how many of you feel you must 'clean' the house before said in-laws arrive?

I can raise my hand on both questions. Cleaning is what I did most of last week. Now that my in-laws are here, I can relax a bit and just enjoy our visit. Mom is taking advantage of my WiFi to work on genealogy research while I sit next to her with my own laptop doing my writing thing.

With family visits comes food. Because there are four of us instead of just two, I've been cooking some things I don't normally make because we can indulge a bit without feeling like we have to eat a larger portion. Monday night when they arrived I made a small roast with boiled potatoes and 'canned' peas. Canned because they're the only kind Bob will eat. I survived.

Last night was spaghetti and garlic bread. I measured the spaghetti for a 5-person serving so I could put at least one serving in the freezer for me. I do that with a lot of meals so I don't have to cook big meals for just me the three weeks Bob is gone. I only made 1/2 a loaf of french bread, giving us each a 1/4 of the 1/2 loaf. YUM! I can't remember the last time I had garlic bread. It was definitely a treat. For dessert I had a 1/2 a blueberry and 1/2 a peach pie left over from when our daughter and her family were here in July. I had a small piece of cherry pie, warmed up then 1/4 c up of canned milk poured over it. I grew up eating my cobblers that way. Again, not something we have on a regular basis.

Tonight we won't be as lucky. Normally we reserve Pizza Night at Memories Sweet Shoppe for the Wed. Bob comes home... so only once every six weeks. But this will be the only opportunity to take Mom and Dick, both who love pizza. We'll eat our share and hopefully I can bring 4 pieces hope to put in the freezer for later.

Before going to bed tonight I'll put a brisket in the oven to slow-cook all night long so we can enjoy a traditional BBQ brisket and all the fixin's in honor of Dick's birthday. We'll top it off with homemade ice cream. No cake.

So yeah, this week it is more about the portions. And I'm doing a better job of it than Bob. I told him last night I didn't want to hear any complaints when he steps on the scales Tuesday morning. So far, I've lost 1 pound.

I'll be back in here next week and hopefully getting things in line the way they should be. Wish me luck... there are days I feel I need it.
Enjoy the Journey!
